Mixed Company of Yale
SATB
Mixed Company is Yale’s oldest all-gender, all-genre a cappella group. In the fabled autumn of 1981, during an era when America's main sources of entertainment were Michael Jackson and Pac-Man, a spunky group of Yalies dreamed of something more. Torn between music and sketch comedy, Broadway and rock 'n' roll, they decided to form an exciting new group that drew from the best aspects of these elements and mixed them up. Being the first group on campus to mix all genres of music and only the second group to include all genders, they naturally called themselves "Mixed Company.”
The trouble started when, at a performance some time ago, the person introducing the group did not have his wits about him. He announced that “Mixed Gumpany” would be coming to the stage. This had three effects: 1. The term “Gump” was born, used in an affectionate manner to refer to a member of the ‘Co. 2. Mixed Company immediately sought a new design for their logo. 3. Mixed Co had to get through that performance without breaking into laughter.
Mixed Co performs for schools, country clubs, private parties, corporate events, reunions, fundraisers, retirement homes, festivals, and more. We've garnered rave reviews from teachers, executives, world leaders, and even sometimes our parents, who wonder where they went wrong as they watch us while away our bright college years singing our hearts out instead of, you know, studying. We are proud to do one charity gig every tour. Some of our favorites have been for the Seattle Children’s Hospital and Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa.
Although we do have an explanation for “Gump,” we can’t explain the bowling theme or the yellow. But it does make for some amazing merch!
Mixed Co prides itself on musicianship, unique and powerful soloists, a fun group dynamic, and a recently revived finsta. As Yale’s first and only all-gender all-genre group, Mixed Co sings everything from pop and R&B, to jazz, rock, and even folk. We tour three times/year, and our recent tour locations include Peru, Morocco, China, Colombia, Brazil, Bermuda, New Zealand, Tampa, and Seattle. We are currently recording an album and we can’t wait for our new members to be a part of it! We are so excited to sing with the newest additions to “gump”!
