RUSH TERMINOLOGY

“Tap Night”

One of Yale’s most unique traditions, Tap Night is the official initiation ceremony for a group. Once you have been admitted (or “tapped”) into a group and confirmed your place, they will run around campus collecting all their new members and invite you to partake in some of the group’s traditions. They’re not cults, we promise!

“Walk”

Sometimes called an “Evening Walk,” this is when members of a group will join you on a walk around campus to discuss the group and allow you to ask any questions, as you would on a Rush Meal.

“Jam”

Jams are large concerts held at the beginning of the semester when every SGC group performs together in a venue. This year, Woolsey Jam will be on August 31st, and Marsh Jam will be on September 2nd.

“Senior Group”

The Whiffenpoofs and Whim ‘n Rhythm are Yale’s only two “senior groups,” meaning that they only accept members from the junior class of students as they transition to their senior year. They represent the very best that Yale a cappella has to offer, and are often made up of members from the 15 “underclassman groups.”
