Founded in 1969, the same year that Yale College first admitted undergraduate women, The New Blue was not only Yale's first women's a cappella group, but the university’s oldest women's organization of any kind. The “Old Blue” was out, and The New Blue was in. The 11 pioneering women to found the group had to fight to make their voices heard in Yale’s male-dominated a cappella scene, but their dynamic and innovative sound could not be ignored.

Over 50 years later, we’re still proudly pushing the boundaries of collegiate a cappella. Since 2020, The New Blue has been honored to welcome all women and non-binary folks of note, continuing our mission to always stand (and sing!) as a proud, living symbol of change at Yale. Our soprano-alto repertoire boasts everything from haunting folk music to jazz and blues to today’s pop radio hits, showcasing our breathtaking blend and complex arrangements, which are created entirely by our own members.

This year, The New Blue is excited for our upcoming tours to Chicago, Milwaukee, and Greece, where we’re looking forward to making even more memories together, and to welcome our new “bloibs” along for the journey! As a member of The New Blue, or a “bloi,” you’ll have the opportunity to sing all around the world, whether it be in a fortress on the San Juan coast or among the fields of the only tea garden in North America. But beyond the tours, performances, and rehearsals, you’ll get to discover the friendships that define The New Blue—friendships that begin with our shared love of music, and last long after our final note together!
